When is the right time to go to a sober-living home during or after rehab?

People go through drug addiction all the time. There are so many reasons as to why drug or alcohol addiction might happen. People need numerous methods and ways to treat their drug addiction, some need that extra care through a better environment as compared to the rehab centers or just home, they need something like a separate place, away from the actual world but still feels like the actual world—that is what people need and such a place is offered by numerous rehab centers. That place is called sober-living home.

Sober-living homes is not a new idea, many institutions that have to work with the human minds and people that are going through serious mental issues are given sober-living homes to help with their treatments. Sober-living homes are perfect for people that are going through illnesses, for cancer patients, for mentally ill patients, and especially for patients that are suffering from addiction, whether it is from drugs, alcohol, food, gaming, or just about any addiction. Why? Because addiction means a safe but unsafe environment, being surrounded by a bubble that slowly eats you alive. The only way for addiction to go away is to completely cut the thing that you are addicted to. That is the start of the recovery, there are many other phases that a patient of drug addiction treatment has to go through in order to fully heal themselves.

Is sober-living home for patients who are going through rehab or after rehab?

Sober-living homes are actually for both types of patients. Some patients need a secluded environment with proper medical staff and a few fellow patients who are going through drug or alcohol addiction themselves. So, for such patients a sober-living home offers that environment who just aren’t getting any results out of their previous method of treatment.

The same goes for patients that have finished their treatment program for drug or alcohol addiction, but they have a hard time trying to adjust to their life before addiction took a hold of them. So, these people need that extra support in the form of sober-living homes. They get to live in a home-type environment where they are surrounded by fellow patients who support one another during this time of fully recovering—they all behave like a family, and the medical staff checks up on the patients daily and gives them their required treatments regularly which keeps them intact and away from relapsing.

The methods that are chosen are the 12-step program, group therapy and individual therapy, techniques and coping mechanisms to combat negative thoughts, visitation of family members and former drug addicts to help the patients feel motivated. These are all the things that sober-living home treatment plan includes.

So, when is the right time to go for sober-living?

As mentioned above, there are a few reasons why people have to get such an environment. Some people just do not respond well with the hospital-like environment of inpatient treatment program or even outpatient program where they have to go to a rehab facility daily for a few hours. Therefore, such people feel more comfortable during their rehab treatment when they are at a secluded and safe environment such as a sober-living home.

For people who have already done their treatment, they just can’t adjust with the real world, it is a shocking change, so getting some feel of the real world at the sober-living home is all what they need to really get back to the life they used to live.
